From a campus notification from UW police:

On Friday, July 22, 2011, at approximately 7:20 p.m., two UW students were walking from Red Square into the Quad near Gowen and Smith Halls, when a naked man jumped from the bushes along Smith Hall. The suspect was approximately 30 to 40 feet away and masturbating; the suspect made eye contact with both victims, who observed him move to a doorway leading into Smith Hall. CHS: After learning Craigslist bike was stolen, buyer returns it to owner

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Capitol Hill Seattle has a rare happy bike theft story. After the buyer became suspicious of her baby-faced seller from "Sandy Point Way," she searched online and found the bike's rightful owner. Here's the description of the suspect as told to Cleo, the happy re-owner of the bike:

A 6 ft. tall man who looked like George Michael ("baby" face, good looking, captain of the football team/homecoming king type.)  He had an average build, definitely not homeless looking but was very friendly, smiley and almost charismatic.  He had a vehicle but did not park close enough to see what kind/type it was or its license plate #.  He used a GPS, was clueless about directions and was unfamiliar with Seattle.  He said he lived on Sand Point Way in North Seattle and was from the Portland area.  (He called it Sandy Point way...)  He gave a first name, but she has since forgotten it.  His story was that the bike was his girlfriend's but that she was pregnant and going to buy a car with the money.  All a big story, I'm sure.  The only other distinguishing thing about him was apparently a gauged earring in his left ear that looked like a dark curled spike.  She passed on a cell phone #, which he no longer seems to answer.

This is all FYI for anybody buying a "used" bike online.  (If it seems suspiciously low-priced, it could very well be stolen.)

Capitol Hill Bike, Beer and Computer Thief Arrested

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

CHS reported this morning on a bike, computer and beer thief caught near Mercer and 16th Ave on Capitol Hill:

An alert neighbor and Seattle Police teamed up Thursday morning to bust a man who had just grabbed a bike -- and a beverage or two -- from next door. Here's an account sent around the neighborhood near St. Joe's this morning and passed along to CHS:

[Neighbor 1] behind the alley from us on 19th and [Neighbor 2] had someone go thru their yard and take beer, coke, and went into their garage and took [Neighbor 1]'s bike. I guess he was thirsty doing his deed this morning. [Neighbor 2] heard something about 6:30a this morning and they alerted the police after noticing the bike was gone. He was caught shortly thereafter on 16th and Mercer with 2 bikes and some computer gear.

SPD posted about the incident on the Blotter:

On February 10th, at approximately 5:10 AM, East Precinct officers responded to the 700 Block of 16th Avenue East on a report of a possible burglary.  An alert neighbor saw an unknown male standing on her property and scared him off.  The neighbor then alerted her neighbor to the fact that this suspicious man was in her yard.  That neighbor went to his garage and discovered he had some property missing, including a bicycle.  Approximately an hour later, an officer, who was still writing up the report from the initial burglary call a few blocks away,  observed a male matching the description with a bicycle in his possession.  The officer then contacted the suspect.  The victim responded to the location and positively identified the stolen bike.  The suspect was taken into custody.  Search incident to arrest, officers found in the suspect’s possession burglary tools, a stolen laptop, and drugs.  The 43 year old suspect was later booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Burglary, Possession of Stolen Property, VUCSA and outstanding warrants.

Man Wanted by DOC Injures Officer, Gets Tased

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

From Central District News:

A Seattle Police officer was injured while trying to subdue a wanted man January 22 at Garfield Community Center. Officers used a Taser on the man before placing him under arrest. It is not clear from the report how the officer was injured.

According to the police report, officers saw a man sitting on a park bench near the Center and recognized him from past incidents. They ran his information, which showed he had a felony escape warrant from the Department of Corrections (DOC).

By the time the officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, around 1 p.m., he had gone inside the Community Center. They went inside after him and found him near the north entryway. The officers tried to place him into custody.

Central District Bar Robbed of Liquor, Bartender Kicked in Shins

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

From me over at Central District News:

One woman was arrested after an afternoon bar robbery near 22nd Ave S and Jackson November 29. According to the police report, three women in their early 20s walked in the bar around 3 p.m., and one of them asked if she could buy a shot for $1. The bartender told her the shot costs $6, then turned his attention to another patron.

While his back was turned, the patron saw the women grab two bottles of liquor and run out of the store. The bartender chased them outside and confronted them. One suspect took the bottles from her purse and gave them to her two companions, who both fled. The suspect then allegedly kicked the bartender in the shins twice, cutting his hand in the process.

The victim was able to snap a photo of the suspect with his phone and called the police. Officers found the suspect at a nearby deli. The suspect had a 12 and a half inch knife in her purse, which she said was for self-defense. She was arrested on investigation of robbery.

Morning Blotter: First Seahawks Get Clobbered, Then Fan

Friday, November 12th, 2010

After the Seahawks got clobbered by the Giants 41-7, a fan got clobbered by a passer-by after the driver of the vehicle the victim was in honked at a drunk woman in the street.

The assault happened on S Holgate St as the crowd was clearing out around 4:30 Nov. 7, according to the police report. A woman stumbled into the street in front of a vehicle in which the victim was sitting in the passenger seat. The driver of the vehicle honked at the woman, who the victim said appeared intoxicated.

A man walked up to the passenger side of the car, opened the door, and punched the victim in the mouth. He then allegedly pulled the victim from the car and punched him again. The victim fell to the ground and cut his elbow.

The suspect left and was not found. The victim's mouth required several stitches.

I think the lesson here is that, not matter how good you think your offense is, don't let your defense drop or it's game over.

Hot Dog Vendor Dispute Culminates with Propane Tank Attack

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

A dispute between two SODO hot dog vendors* culminated with one suspect allegedly throwing a propane tank through the rear windshield of the victim's car. The flammable-gas-container attack occurred just before 2:45 a.m. November 1 near 1st Ave S and S Hanford St, according to the police report.

The victims (there were two people in the car at the time), stopped their vehicle in the middle of 1st Ave S when two suspects said something to them. The suspects approached the vehicle, and one of them reached into the vehicle's open window, saying, "I'm going to rob you." The other suspect then threw a propane tank at the back window of the car, then again at the car's driver's side.

The driver of the vehicle pepper sprayed the suspects, who were found by police and arrested not far from the site of the attack.

* It is unclear from the report which parties involved were, in fact, hot dog vendors. The officer notes that the original call was about a disturbance between two vendors, but no more hot dog related details are given.

Man Shot and Killed in Downtown Seattle (UPDATED)

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Report of a shooting at 2nd and Pike. Lots of cops on scene.

Police have 1 man in custody, refusing to answer questions. Victim shot in the head, en route to HMC

Update: 5:32 p.m.

Details from KOMO:

Witness Lloyd Hogan said he was inside a nearby chocolate shop when the incident occurred.

"The gunman was seen running up the alley. He went into (muffled name) gyro shop at First and Pine, and he was hiding in the bathroom," he said. "He came out of the bathroom with his hands in the air. They ordered him to get down on the ground, and they made him inch towards them."

Update 5:39 p.m.

Rough details from commenter Matt E:

Saw him from my car laying on the ground after I passed the hard rock cafe. I though he'd been hit by a car. Pool of blood, bone sticking out his skull, and a frantic downtown "tourist guide" screaming her head off. It was a surreal situation and crazy to think he'd been shot with all those people around. I'm glad they got the guy in custody so quick as there were NO police around when I was there.

Also, here's a video of the scene, from commenter CoprorateMonkey.

Update 5:54 p.m.

Sources tell us gang units are on scene. Unclear whether gang unit detectives are involved in the investigation, or just assisting.

Police have recovered a gun at the scene.

UPDATE 6:42 p.m.

According to court records, the man arrested in the shooting has a long rap sheet going back to 1999, when he was a juvenile.  Court records indicate the man has convictions for theft, assault (three times), resisting arrest, drug and unlawful weapons possession, burglary, and unlawful imprisonment.

Update 7:39: Police confirm that the victim has died.

Here's SPD's official release:

On October 26th at approximately 4:41 p.m. officers responded to 911 calls of shots fired at 2nd Avenue and Pike Street with a male victim reportedly down.  Officers arrived on scene and discovered a 31-year-old male victim on the northwest corner of 2nd Avenue and Pike Street who had sustained a gunshot wound.  SFD medics were called to the scene and subsequently transported the victim to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.  The victim has since died as a result of his injuries.

Responding officers saturated the area.  Foot beat officers located and arrested a 27-year-old male suspect in the 100 block of Pine Street.  Officers also recovered a handgun.  The suspect was interviewed by Homicide detectives and will be booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Murder.

This remains an active and on-going homicide investigation.
