Job Description: I oversaw all aspects of operation of the student newspaper, including writing, editing, design and ad sales.

I also published important and difficult stories about campus life and student rights. We won several awards from the Illinois College Press Association, including awards for editorial writing, sports writing, and design.

For The Purpose Of: The Pacemaker Awards set out to find the best in student publications in the United States. Catch, a student literary magazine at Knox College, won for a 2008 issue of which I was the journalism editor. The magazines are judged by: Content, quality of writing and editing, photography, art and graphics, layout and design and overall concept and theme.

For The Purpose Of: Selected by professional journalists working in the state of Illinois, an ad I designed urging students to write for the paper won first place, defeating even large daily newspapers with much larger staffs and budgets.

For The Purpose Of: Chosen from peer-sized colleges in Illinois, I won third place for the design of the front page of The Knox Student. Judges looked at randomly-picked front pages to decide which newspapers had consistently effective and unique front page designs.

For The Purpose Of: To pick the best works of investigative, long-form reporting of a story. The story I worked on pertained to the school’s handling of student-to-student sexual assault complaints and led to a revamping of the sexual assault policies and procedures.
